Now, Army banks on frozen sperm

Captain Shekhar has been married five years. His wife Aarti, an HR executive, works for an MNC in Delhi. For the past two-and-a-half years, he’s been in a non-family posting in the N-E. That means he’s been home only twice for 15 days. Now they want to start a family, but they are hardly together. So when Shekhar came home last March, he did the next best thing. He froze his sperm. Now Aarti has the option of having a baby whenever she wants to. Of course, it has to be through an IVF process.

Freezing sperms is an option many defence personnel are choosing nowadays. What was common among young, upwardly-mobile, professional couples and in some cases, even bachelors, has caught on among men in uniform too, especially those posted away from home for long periods.
