German dad to deposit passport as collateral

Eager to take his surrogate twin babies back home to initiate adoption proceedings, German father Jan Balaz on Monday gave an “inspiring” undertaking before the Supreme Court agreeing to deposit his passport with the Indian consulate in Berlin to prove his bona fides.

Terming the undertaking “fair”, Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam told a Bench comprising Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly that the government would do its best to script a happy ending for the twins.

Desperate to prove his bonafide before the apex court, Balaz’s counsel Nikhil Goel handed over his undertaking to the Bench, which among others included the details of an NGO in Berlin which would report back to Indian authorities and the apex court periodically about the well-being of the children.
